A Prayer for Your Child

by Anne Marie Owens

Rich and I love our Sophie and Jude. And we long for them to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. We pray that Christ would capture their affections and that Jesus would give them hearts that want to obey. Yet it’s so humbling to pray for them because we know that we are completely dependent on the Spirit to do what no amount of “good parenting” can do...change their hearts.

This weekend Ann Montgomery sent me a really great prayer to use for our children! It is a prayer from the website of Arlene Pellicane. It is simple, biblical, and beautiful. And it is soaked in the promises of God. I hope you will be as encouraged as I was when I read it. And I hope you will use it as a tool not only to pray for your own children, but also for all covenant children of Westminster.

Dear Lord, I come before you about _________ (insert your child’s name).  May ______ choose life so they he/she may live and love the Lord, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him (Deuteronomy 30:20).

Your word says in Psalm 1:1, “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers.”  May __________ have the power to walk away from the wicked and not to hang out with kids who will corrupt good character.

Have mercy on _________ O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion, blot out his/her transgressions (Psalm 51:1-2).

Lord may _______ speak gracious words to family and friends because gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones (Proverbs 16:24).

May ________ not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present his/her requests to God.  And may the peace of God which transcends all understanding, guard ________’s heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).

Give ______ boldness as You Lord are his/her light and salvation.  You are the stronghold of his/her life, of whom shall he/she be afraid? (Psalm 27:1).

Thank you Lord for hearing my prayer.  Children are a heritage from you.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
