The Soundtrack to Your Faith

Hillsong brings their music and the Gospel to theaters across the world

As a high-school English teacher, I spend a lot of time reading and scoring student essays. It’s the price I pay to have summers off. This task gets old rather quickly. Reading what a high school student thinks about Poe’s use of symbolism in “The Masque of the Red Death” can only hold your interest for so long.

To help combat my wandering mind while I read and score nearly 100 of these writings at a time, I listen to film scores. Misplaced commas seem much more important while listening to the theme song from Indiana Jones, subject-verb agreement takes on new meaning when the theme from Star Wars comes on, and nothing gets me excited about a student using textual evidence to prove a point quite like when the melody from Harry Potter comes on. Students are more likely to get a low score when I’m listening to the Jaws theme.

Just like these songs transport me out of the mundane task of scoring papers and help me through the day, the same is true of many current worship songs. Within a few measures of music, my mind can be taken away from the troubles and distraction of this world and refocused on the love of God, His grace, or simply returning to His presence.

Many of these songs that move me have come from a common, yet unlikely, source: Hillsong. It seems unlikely that a small church in Australia would shape the worship of Christians around the world, but God often likes to move in unlikely ways. If you think you haven’t heard of the band, you have. Songs like “Oceans”, “Hosanna”, and “Cornerstone” are but a small sampling of the musical catalogue that this church and its musicians have produced.

Another way that God is using this band to glorify Him is through an upcoming venture on the silver screen. Even though you might not be able to make it to Indonesia to see the band in concert (or bring an outsider to experience a Gospel centered event), that experience might be coming to a movie theater *near you.

A few different trailers for the Hillsong movie, set to be released September 30, have been released. See one here and another here.

Rarely do Christians have something of which to be proud when it comes to Hollywood productions. However, I have great hope for not only the high production value and professionalism with which this movie is produced, but also for the potential impact that it could have on millions of people world-wide.

I hope that this film is delivered in a way that focuses on the truth of the Gospel and the passion that a small group of believers have for Jesus.

I hope we can all have the faith to walk upon the water when called to do so.

*near- as in at least an hour-and-a-half away. Everything’s relative.

Thanks Reid, I laughed out loud and was inspired to re-watch the trailer! Group tickets for WPC-woot! Can't wait to see at a theater *near by! :) Seriously, I am PUMPED because this film gives followers the chance to promote the Gospel and to see grace do its amazing thing through out the rest of the world!
